According to a Thornberry family data sheet on file at the Fairfield Public library and prepared by Harry C Thornberry in July 1993: Susan Elvira Lewis was a daughter of Stephen and Sarah Ann Ady Lewis. They married in Belmont County, OH. and came to Iowa in 1859. Married David Griffith Thornberry on November 3, 1874 in Jefferson County, Iowa. Children: Thomas Cummings, Clarence E, Harry, Rolla Griffith. --------- Obituary for Mrs. Susan Thornberry Fairfield Daily Ledger Monday April 20, 1953 Storm Injuries Prove Fatal To Fairfield Woman Injuries received when she was blown from her front porch during last Wednesday's wind storm have proven fatal to Mrs. Susan Thornberry, 95-year-old Fairfield resident. She passed away about 4 p.m. Saturday at the Jefferson county hospital where she was taken immediately after she was injured at her home, 103 N. Sixth Street. Mrs. Thornberry went to her front door Wednesday afternoon to see if there was mail in her mail box. Just as she opened the storm door, a gust of wind caught it and ripped it from the house. The door and Mrs. Thornberry landed on the front sidewalk. The aged woman suffered severe head injuries and a possible broken hip from the fall. Last rites were held this afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Weston Behner funeral home with Dr. E.A. Piper in charge. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery. Susan Thornberry was born May 10, 1858 in Jefferson county, Iowa, the daughter of the late Stephen and Sarah Lewis, and she spent her entire life in Fairfield and Jefferson county. She was united in marriage to David G. Thornberry who passed away in 1918. She was a member of the Methodist church. Mrs. Thornberry is survived by two sons: Thomas Thornberry, Oelwein, Ia.; and Clarence E. Thornberry, Van Nuys, Calif., and six grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Emma I.
