Obituary: BAYOU LA BATRE Clarence Hubert Steiner , founder of Steiner Shipyard Inc. in Bayou La Batre, died at his home Saturday. He was 80. Steiner was born Oct. 7, 1913, into a fishing and boat-building family in Bon Secour. The family moved to Bayou La Batre when he was young, and Steiner grew up helping his father in all aspects of the boat-building business. Steiner quit Alba High School where he excelled at athletics, especially track to become a commercial fisherman when he was 16. A year later, he became master of the Eagle, one of the boats he had helped his father build. The 46-foot wooden vessel still is maintained by the family and remains one of the most familiar sights at the annual Bayou La Batre Blessing of the Fleet. In 1959, Steiner purchased a small boat repair business in Bayou La Batre and Steiner Shipyard Inc. was born. While working full time as a master carpenter with the Coast Guard, Steiner devoted all his spare time to developing the repair yard, with the help of his sons. The Steiner family built a reputation for operating one of the finest quality repair and boat building yards on the Gulf Coast. Friends remembered Steiner as an honest man, who knew the value of hard work and discipline. He was ''one of the finest boat builders and wood craftsmen there ever was,'' said family friend Vincent Bosarge. Steiner was a member of St. Margaret's Church and of St. Dominic's Parish in Mobile. Steiner met Dorothy Dukes in 1934 and married her the next year. The couple raised their family of four sons and two daughters in Bayou La Batre. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy; three sons, Ronald Steiner , Russell Steiner and Roger Dale Steiner ; two daughters, Rebecca Steiner Nickles and Carolyn Steiner Overstreet; two sisters, Elva Shepard and Flossie Barnes; 18 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. A wake will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Radney Funeral Home in Mobile. Visitation is set for Tuesday at St. Margaret Catholic Church from 9:30 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Oddfellows Cemetery in Bayou La Batre.
