Bio

Roy Dean Bennett, 104, passed away Sunday, July 12. Born in Whitney, he was a WWII veteran and also worked at the Lubbock South Plains Army Flying School on gliders during the War. He was a hydraulic jack mechanic, a beloved father, and friend to many in the community. Known for his quiet humor and gentle way, Roy Bennett was a fixture on 1st Street, moving there when it was Route 1, and watching as the town grew up around him. BennettImmediate survivors are his wife, Lillie Bennett; daughter, Dorothy Bond of Lubbock; son, Dwight Bennett of Gainesville, Fla.; brother, Melvin Bennett of Plainview; and sister, Doris McPeak of Waco. Other survivors include seven grandkids; nine great-grandkids; three great-great grandkids; and a large number of close and cherished relatives in the Plainview area. Roy Bennett was a member of the First Baptist Church. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at First Baptist Church Ford Chapel with Rev. John Ballard officiating. Interment will follow at the City of Lubbock Cemetery.
