James Carwile Brantley was in the army during World War II. He was a tail gunner in the Army Air Corps. He "flew the hump", the China, Burma, India route, dropping bombs. He is believed to have flown in a B29 that flew over the Himalayas. Because of the heights they flew, it was the only type of plane at the time that was pressurized. He came out of the war as a corporal. He was an electrician at Darco for a while and then joined the Army National Guard in 1948 or 1949.
