Bio

Mildred Francis Burkett, affectionately known as Mema to her grandchildren and GG to her great-grandchildren, left this world to her heavenly home on December 18, 2008. A family graveside service will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park on Monday, December 22, 2008, at 10:00 A.M. followed by a memorial service at First Baptist Church of Midland at 2:00 P.M. Visitation with the family after the memorial service will be in the Church Parlor. Mildred was born on April 20, 1917 to Robert and Effie Yates in Eldorado, Oklahoma, where she grew up and graduated from high school. She attended The University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1940. While at The University of Oklahoma, she met and married her husband, Robert (Bob) Burkett, on May 6, 1938 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. After graduation, she and Robert moved to Bakersfield, California where he was stationed as a pilot during WWII. They later lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma until moving to Midland in 1950. Mildred was the first secretary to the principal of Lee High School when it was established in 1961. She was instrumental in forming the Midland Chapter of American Association of University Women (AAUW), President of the Midland PTA, Yucca Garden Club and 20th Century Study Club, as well as being active in other community organizations. Mildred was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Midland for more than 50 years, teaching Sunday school and serving on the wedding committee and many other church activities. She loved her church and her many wonderful Christian friends she made through the years. Mildred loved all sports, especially playing golf and snow skiing down the "bunny slope" at various ski resorts in New Mexico and Colorado. She enjoyed playing bridge and needle pointing and spending time at their home in Deerhaven on Lake LBJ, especially when her family or friends were there. She and Robert enjoyed traveling to the New England states for the changing of the leaves, and throughout Europe, many times with family and friends. Mildred is survived by her husband of 70 years, Robert (Bob) Burkett, her three children, sons, Mike Burkett and wife, Karen, of Benbrook, Texas, and Richard Burkett and wife, Sandra, of Lewisville, Texas, and daughter, Linda Whitaker, and husband, David, of Midland, Texas, grandchildren, Steve Burkett and wife, Kristen, of Denver, Colorado, Karen Orndorff and husband Jerry, of Ft. Worth, Texas, Mark Burkett of Ft. Worth, Texas, Rob Foster and wife, Janee, of Allen, Texas, Charles Burkett and wife, Stephanie of Denton, Texas, and Monica Witty and husband, Todd, of Denver, Colorado, and10 great-grandchildren. The family requests that memorials be given to the First Baptist Church of Midland Building Fund, 2104 W. Louisiana, Midland, Texas 79701, Hospice of Midland, P.O.
