Roy McMurtry, 86 years of age, of Broken Bow, Nebraska, long-time resident of Custer County, Nebraska, passed away early Monday morning, February 13, 1967 at a local hospital there. He made his home in the 700 block on South Fifth Avenue (east side, middle of the block), for many years now. He is survived by his daughters, Ione Kohler of Anaheim, California, and Mrs. Lois Hill of Berwyn, Nebraska, and by two sons, Ray McMurtry now of Lakewood, California and Richard McMurtry now of Lincoln, Nebraska, and also by one brother, Lon McMurtry of Ogallala, Nebraska and others. Funeral services were held at the Govier Bros. Mortuary chapel in Broken Bow, Nebraska at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 1967, with the Rev. John Hammons, pastor of the First Christian Church here, officiating. Mrs. Ralph (Zuie) Holcomb, was organist and J. Roy Fauquet was soloist, who sang "How great Thou Art* and "Precious Lord, taken my Hand". Interment was made in the cemetery at Broken Bow, Nebraska following final committal rites. Roy McMurtry was born on March 8, 1880 at Bedford, Iowa, the youngest son of Andrew and Ruth McMurtry, and he died in Community Hospital in Broken Bow, Nebraska February 13, 1967 at the age of 86 years, 11 months, 5 days. The family resided in Iowa state until he was about 12 years old, moving then to Nebraska. They resided for a year at the historic Log Ranch (the Milo & Frank Young Ranch, bldg. 1st courthouse for Custer County, Nebraska) southeast of Callaway, while the family built their home in Turner Valley. Later, as a young man, he moved with his parents to the Sargent, Nebraska community. While in Sargent, he met and then married Emma Doty. To this union, a daughter, Iona, was born. After his wife's passing in 1911, Mr. McMurtry took his small daughter and resided for a while in California. Then, he later returned to Nebraska, and resided in Broken Bow and also at Anselmo, Nebraska. On April 14, 1923 he was united in marriage to Florence Hanke. Of this union was born two-sons, Ray and Richard, and a daughter Lois. They made their home in Anselmo until 1944 when they moved to Broken Bow where he spent the remainder of his life with the exception of one year spent in North Platte, Nebraska. His wife Florence died March 20, 1953. He was in 1954 baptized in the Christian Church in Broken Bow, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents, both of his wives and by four brothers and 5 sisters and one grandson, Monte Roy Hill. He is survived by his 4 children, 2 daughters, Mrs. Al (One) Kohler, Anaheim, California, and Mrs. Duane (Lois) Hill, Berwyn where he himself recently has been residing, and by 2 sons, Ray McMurtry of Lakewood, Calif., and Richard of Lincoln, Nebraska; also by nine grandchildren, and one brother, Lon McMurtry of Ogallala, Nebraska and also by a number of nieces and nephews.
