Bio

A. R. (Tony) Jakub, 97, Grand Island, died Thursday (6/25/09) at the Golden Lakeview Nursing Home in Grand Island. Mr. Jakub was born March 7, 1912 to Joseph and Kristina Jakub at Brainard. He graduated from Brainard High School in 1930 and then attended Grand Island Business College. He operated Tony's Loan Company until 1976 when he retired. He married Letha Gish in 1936; they were the parents of a son, Marlyn Jakub and daughter, LeAnne. Letha passed away in 1949. In 1950, he married Gertrude Wessel. Gertrude passed away February 14, 2003. Tony served 2 years during World War II in the son, Marlyn Jakub and daughter, LeAnne. Letha passed away in 1949. In 1950, he married Gertrude Wessel. Gertrude passed away February 14, 2003. Tony served 2 years during World War II in the European Theater with the 9th Army Headquarters in the Battle Casualty Division. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a past navigator. Earlier in life he was an active sportsman, hunting pheasant and duck, and fishing. He enjoyed playing golf and attending Nebraska football games. Survivors include his son of Dunedin, New Zealand; and daughter, LeAnne Lau and husband, Jerry Lau, Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Proskovec and her husband, Ellis, David City; sister-in-law, Mrs. Henry (Adeline) Jakub, David City; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Anthony Lau; by his parents; five brothers: Joseph Jr., Rudy, Fred, Edward and Henry Jakub; and five sisters: Veronica Polacek; Rose Sloup; Victoria Niemann; Kristina Jakub; Ann Jisa and one half-sister, Anges Ludvik. Services were held Wednesday (7/1/09) at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Grand Island with Father Harry Kurtenbach officiating. Burial was at Grand Island Cemetery with military honors by the Grand Island American Legion.
