Bio

Son of David Curran and of Annie Forehand immigrated from Ireland in 1868. Husband of Bridget Catherine (Collins) Curran. Father of 8 children including Frances Ruth (Curran) Quinn who is interred at this cemetery with her husband Joseph Sebastian Quinn, Sr. John was born in Ireland in 1851 and immigrated in 1868, possibly through the port of New Orleans. He may have had a relative named Robert Curran. He lived and worked in Arkansas (and Missouri?) before crossing the Red River into Texas about 1875. In Dallas he took a room in a boarding house run by the Timothy Collins family. He married Timothy and Abigail (Murphy) Collin's daughter Bridget on the 4th of July 1877 in Dallas. Witnesses to the marriage were Bridget's sister Josie Collins and a Mr. David Phelan. John and Bridget had their first child, Annie Theresa, in April 1878. By 1880 they had moved to Ellis county, living in Garrett before settling in Ennis where they lived the rest of their lives. John was a road builder. He had learned road building from constructing embankments for the railroads. He was a section foreman for the railroad in Ellis county. He also farmed the many acres he owned there. In 1904 he built the homestretch of Oaklawn horse track at Hot Springs, Arkansas. On his 75th birthday John was asked if he felt old. He replied that he felt "as spry as a cat" and then he leaped over the fence that surrounded his yard. John lived to be over 78 years old. - poss immigration record: New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger Lists (including Ellis Island), 1820-1957 Name: John Curran Ethnicity/ Nationality: Irish Age: 17 Birth Date: abt 1851 Place of Origin: Ireland Departure Port: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland Destination: USA Arrival Date: 30 Jun 1868 Arrival Port: New York, New York, USA Ship Name: Manhattan
