Mrs. Hazel Wright Zeigler Simmons, 93, of Walterboro, died Tuesday evening, May 6, 2008 at her residence under the care of Odyssey Health Care Hospice. Funeral services will be conducted 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon, May 8, 2008, from Grace Advent Christian Church, 398 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro with The Reverend Wayne Lucas and The Reverend Nelson Howe officiating. Interment will follow in the churchyard. Mrs. Simmons was born March 28, 1915, in Dallas, Texas and was a daughter of the late Willie Jasper Wright and the late Anna Floyd Wright. She was twice married, first to the late Duncan Heyward Zeigler and secondly to the late Walter I. Simmons. She and Mr. Zeigler owned and operated the first convenience store on the Bells Highway in Walterboro, known as Zeigler's Superette; she was a former employee of First National Bank of Orangeburg in Walterboro and Piggly Wiggly in Walterboro. She was a member of Grace Advent Christian Church where she was a former Sunday School Teacher. Mrs. Hazel loved music and was a wonderful musician; for many years she was the Organ Mistress of Grace Advent Christian Church, as well as the resident organist for The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home; was a member of the first ladies choral club in Walterboro; and will be remembered for always sharing her blessings of talent with others. Surviving are: three daughters, Doris Z. Mincey of Walterboro, Janice Z. Starner and her husband Don of Columbia, and Brenda Z. McMillan and her husband H. M. of Walterboro; a daughter-in-law, Frances Zeigler of Walterboro; a brother, C. R. Wright of Texas; and a sister, Mamie Pyle of Boonesville, Arkansas. There are eight grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild that also survives. She was preceded in death by her son, Raymond Jasper Zeigler. Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorials be directed in her memory to Grace Church for use with the Choir Fund, 398 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro, SC 29488.
