SULLIVAN - Wallace D. 'Boppy' Cole, 87, of Sullivan died at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday (June 24, 2009) at McKinley Court in Decatur. Celebration of Life services will be 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan with the Rev. Rebecca Ingram officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan with military rites conducted by Sullivan American Legion Post #68. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice. Wallace was born November 26, 1921 in Bethany, IL, the son of Hubert & Bessie Wallace Cole. He graduated from Bethany High School in 1939. He then attended the University of Illinois for three years & was a member of the Marching Illini band. Wallace then enlisted in the U.S. Navy & served in WW II as a Naval Air Flight Navigator attaining the rank of Lieutenant J.G. His best friend in the service was Roy Collie from Decatur & they remained best friends throughout his life. Wallace was a farmer for 39 years throughout Moultrie County & was a Holstein dairy farmer for 20 years during that time. He volunteered as a 4-H leader in Moultrie County, was a member of the Sullivan First Christian Church, the Moultrie Country Farm Bureau, George A. Sentel Masonic Lodge #764 AF & AM & Sullivan American Legion Post #68. He was an avid Illini fan & enjoyed fishing, camping & boating. He had an abundance of patience teaching many kids how to water ski. Wallace & Fran loved their winters in Florida. He enjoyed spending most of his retirement years sharing precious moments with his beloved grandchildren & great-grandchildren. He married Frances 'Fran' Dawson on November 18, 1944 in Oklahoma City, OK & she preceded him in death on December 12, 2005. Surviving are his children, Dean (Judy) Cole of West Yellowstone, Montana, Dan (Dee) Cole of Chapin/Jacksonville, IL, Debbie Cole of Sullivan; brother, Gene Cole of Decatur; sisters, Betty Jones of San Antonio, TX & Carolyn Munroe of Decatur; grandchildren, Tad Cole, Alicen Collins, Beaux Cole, Heather Taylor, Andy Cole & Carlie Cole; five great-grandsons & three great-granddaughters, including another great-granddaughter on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife; brother, Jack Cole & sister, Helen Luzi. He will forever be loved & greatly missed.
