Married to Frances "Grace" Williams on 9-3-1941 at the North Loup, NE. Seventh Day Baptist Church. WW II - US Army NORTH LOUP - Harwood LaVern Rice, 86, of North Loup died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at the Valley View Living Center in Ord. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the North Loup Seventh Day Baptist Church. The Rev. Christian Mattison will officiate. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery at North Loup. Military Honors will be provided by the Ord American Legion Post 38 and VFW Post 7029 and the North Loup Ralph Rich American Legion Post 285. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel. Mr. Rice was born Nov. 11, 1922, at Ericson to Herman and Grace Gertrude (Cronk) Rice. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Grace of Ord; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Darla Rice of North Loup and Larry and Dwana Rice of Grand Island. Additional survivors include five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was raised on a farm north of Ericson. He received is education in Ericson and Ord and also helped on the family farm. On Sept. 3, 1941, Harwood was united in marriage to "his girl", Frances "Grace" Williams at the Seventh Day Baptist Church Parsonage in North Loup. Harwood enlisted in the United State Air Corp and later the United States Army. He served for two years and was stationed in Alexandria, La. After the service, he returned to Ord where he worked at the Safeway Store. The couple moved to North Loup where Harwood worked at Ross Williams Oil Co. and later was the Marshall for the Village of North Loup. He then went to work for the Valley County Road Department as a bridge foreman. After his retirement he ran the Big H Bait Shop. Harwood had a love for music. He was a member of the Loup Valley Wranglers for 22 years and helped form the Fun Bunch. He was the lead guitarist, played the banjo and sang. Their bands played for many dances, events and benefits. While in the Fun Bunch Harwood was nicknamed, "Grandpa Jones" from the TV show, Hee Haw. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening and feeding the birds. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, North Loup Fire and Rescue Department, Elks Lodge and the Police Officer's Association. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Hubert and an infant sister, Lena.
