NORTH LOUP -- W. Hubert Rice, 87, of North Loup died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Valley County Hospital in Ord. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the North Loup United Methodist Church. The Revs. Bruce Phillips and Chris Mattison will officiate. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery at North Loup. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ord Memorial Chapel. Walter Hubert Rice was born April 26, 1916, to Herman and Grace (Cronk) Rice at the family home on the Cedar River near Ericson. Survivors of the immediate family include two daughters and a son-in-law, Eleanor and Leonard Holzinger of Litchfield and Nancy Tamayo of North Loup; a son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Bessie Rice of North Loup; and a brother and sister-in-law, Harwood and Grace Rice of North Loup. Survivors also include 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. He was raised in the Ord and Ericson areas. He attended school in Ericson. On April 26, 1938, he married Ruth Richardson at Taylor. From 1938 to 1949, the family lived in Ord and North Loup while Hubie drove a truck. In 1949, the family moved to North Loup. Hubie worked for the Alfalfa Mill, hauled milk, and worked at the Ordnance Plant and Manufacturing Plant in Grand Island. Hubie was the North Loup Village Marshal. Mrs. Rice passed away in 1990. Hubie continued to work for the village of North Loup. He moved to No Lo Villa in 1998 and to the Valley County Nursing Home in 2000. His hobbies included music, playing the drums, guitar and violin for dances, hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a loyal North Loup-Scotia fan and attended most of the sporting events and also enjoyed the Huskers. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Lena Rice; one brother, Robert Rice; and two grandsons, Dawaine Holzinger and Mario Tamayo.
