Bio

Train Rams Auto at Road Crossing Near Winfield Four persons were instantly killed, one hurt fatally and another seriously injured, when a Frisco train struck an automobile near Winfield Sunday afternoon. The dead are Pervy F. Lucas, his wife, and two-year-old baby, of Winfield; Rev. D. W. Otts, of Sulligent, Ala., and Rev. Max Hankins, of Greenwood, Miss. The injured is Rev. B. A. Carter, of Fulton, Miss. Rev. Mr. Hankins died on the way to Amory, Miss., hospital where the other injured minister Monday was reported in a very serious condition. The accident occurred at a grade crossing one mile north of Winfield about 3:30 o'clock. The party were returning from a Baptist association meeting at Old Union, a Baptist church. Mr. Lucas was driving. He approached the crossing around a bad curve with the curtains of the automobile up and is said not to have seen the approaching fast passenger train, No. 6, westbound until too late. The automobile was thrown some distance. The Lucas infant was picked up by the cow-catcher of the train and carried nearly a mile before the train was stopped. The engineer is said not to have seen the automobile until just before the crash. The train was backed up and the injured rushed on to Amory. Mr. Lucas was a prominent merchant of Winfield. He was 40 years old. His body and that of his wife and infant were buried Tuesday in one grave at Old Union Church near Winfield. The bodies of the two slain ministers were taken to their homes. All were well known throughout the district. The automobile was torn to pieces. -- The Marion County News (Hamilton, AL), 25 October 1923 Alabama, Deaths and Burials Index, 1881-1974 about P F Lucas Birth Date: abt 1879 Birth Place: Alabama Death Date: 21 Oct 1923 Death Place: Winfield, Marion, Alabama Death Age: 44 Occupation: Merchant Race: White Marital Status: Married Gender: Male Father Name: Silas W Lucas Father Birth Place: Alabama Mother Name: ??
