"Buttercup" Stallard, 83, of Coeburn, died Thursday (Feb. 9, 2006) at Sunbridge in Kingsport, Tenn. Mr. Stallard was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with the 91st Division of the 5th Army in North Africa and Italy. He served in the battles of Rome, Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley. He received the Purple Heart when wounded in Italy on the Gothic Line on Sept, 15, 1942. Also the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theatre Service Ribbon and Combat Infantryman Badge-Expert Rifle. He was a former employee of Hunsaker Electric in Coeburn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Avis Campbell Stallard; his parents, John Dayton (Dee) and Orpha Stallard; brothers, Buford, Shirley, Cline and Roger Stallard; sisters, Erma Dell Williams and Carma Clark. Survivors include one daughter, Hilda Jean Altman of Baltimore, Md.; three step-daughters, Helen Bolling and Shirley Miller both of Coeburn and Marie Helton of Virginia City; step-son, Arvil Hill; two sisters, Marlene Adkins of Copper Hill, Tenn., Nancy Elizabeth Curtainof San Antonio, Tex.; two brothers, Emory Stallard of Richmond and Dayton Stallard of Clinton, Tenn.; one grandson, James Randy Hill of Coeburn, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service were held Sunday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. in Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. R.L. Crawford officiating. Burial followed at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood. Estes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
