Bio

Nona Geneva McGalliard Smith was born June 14, 1912, in Midlothian, Texas, to Millard Mack and Bertha Hibernia Cooper McGalliard. She was their first child and only daughter. She passed from this life on June 5, 2009, at Denton Regional Medical Center. She graduated from Denton High School in 1930 and married William Taft Smith on October 4 of that year. They celebrated their 68th anniversary just prior to his death on November 10, 1998. They reared their two children on farms in Denton County near Argyle, where they were active in 4-H work. Nona was a diligent Bible student and an accomplished seamstress. Her other interests included gardening, reading, painting, genealogy and helping others. Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at DeBerry Funeral Directors. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors, with Jim Hunt officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Olene Smith Bassham of Argyle; her son, Millard Taft Smith and his wife Nancy of Sanger; two brothers, Byron Cooper McGalliard of Trinity, Texas, and Millard Mack McGalliard Jr. of Dumas, Texas; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, Alva Carlton McGalliard. Memorials may be made to Cherokee Home for Children, P.O. Box 295, Cherokee, TX 76832-9989.
