Bio

Daughter of Henry & Caroline (Herchanbach) Sand. Charlotte and her twin brother, Charlie, were the oldest children in the family. Charlotte attended St. Francis Catholic School through the 8th grade. After leaving school, she worked as a maid in Omaha with other young women from the Humphrey area and talked of the fun they had on their days off. She returned to Humphrey upon the death of her mother so that she could help her father and younger brothers and sister. Charlotte met Joseph Cremers through her cousin and they were married December 18, 1944. For a short time, while Joe was in the Army, they lived in South Carolina. After his discharge, they lived in Lindsay and then in Humphrey. Joe was in partnership with Charlotte's brothers in the grocery business. In 1956, they moved to Genoa where they purchased the locker plant and meat market. Charlotte worked as a cook at Genoa Haven Nursing Home. In 1966, they purchased Cremers Café where Charlotte cooked delicious foods for their many customers. In 1968, they sold the café and bought Cremers Thriftway Grocery Store. After several years, a bakery department was added and Charlotte baked bread, rolls, and doughnuts for the store. They retired from the store in 1982, selling the business to their son Dave. Joe passed away in 1987. Charlotte continued to live in Genoa until 1996 when she moved to a residence in Columbus. She spent the last year in the Long Term Care Facility in Genoa. Charlotte was a member of the American Legion Auxiallary, St. Rose of Lima Altar Society, St. Isidore Christian Mothers, and St. Isidore Quilters. She loved to bowl in her younger years and belonged to a bowling league in Genoa. She loved to play cards, especially sheepshead which she played right up to the end. Charlotte and Joe belonged to a "poker club" card group which started in 1953 and she attended up until she moved to the nursing home. She loved flowers and was proud of her roses. Charlotte was well known for her hospitality, her wonderful cooking, and her hard work. Her faith and family were the most important things in her life. She enjoyed time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and sister and brothers.
