Spencer was the son of George and Jemimiah (Henderickson) Lighthill. He was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He moved with is family to Paulding County Ohio in 1851. Following his arrival, he spent the remainder of his life on the family farm about 3 miles northeast of Oakwood. About three years before his death, he moved to Dupont, Ohio. Spencer enlisted in the 100th Regiment, OVI and served until he was discharged due to ill health. Spencer was considered to be a bit of an eccentric and was said to have "second sight". His first marriage was to Mary Hamilton on June 28, 1869 in Paulding County, Ohio. They were the parents of Franklin, Rosa and Ellsworth. Following her death, he married Catherin Getz, the daughter of Lazanis and Catherine Erick Getz. They had no children. Spencer built his own coffin and put doors/lids on both the top and the bottom.
