Daughter of Alonzo Elias Hooley and Sarah Matilda Park Wife of Alfred Benjamin Harper, married 12 Jun 1907 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah Emma Sarah Hooley was born in Lindon, Utah County, Utah, on Dec. 19, 1886, to Alonzo Elias and Sarah Matilda Park Hooley. She was the oldest of 13 children. She was born in one room of a two-room frame home where her parents then lived. Later they built their own home which still stands in Lindon, Utah. She received her education in the Pleasant Grove Schools, though it was very limited as she was needed so badly at home to help care for her younger brothers and sisters. It was not unusual for her to have to do the marketing, carrying a bucket of eggs in one hand and a baby in the other arm, traveling by foot to Pleasant Grove to the store. When she was approximately twelve years of age she started going out to do homework and nursing for other people in the community, along with working at home and on the farm. At the age of twenty-one, she was married to Alfred Benjamin Harper on June 12, 1907, in the Salt Lake Temple. For a short time after their marriage, they lived in one room of the Alfred William Harper home in London, Utah while they built their own home in Orem, Utah. On Feb. 4, 1909, shortly after moving into their new home, the first of nine children: five daughters and four boys born between 1909 and 1926. She worked very hard throughout her married life, doing her housework and taking care of her children, and also helping in the fields with the farm work. With all her work, she spent many hours taking care of the sick wherever she was needed, which was all charity work. She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, working in the Mutual in her early life and serving as second counselor of the Relief Society from July 1928 through the summer of 1934. She enjoyed taking care of the sick and helped the doctors deliver many babies into the world. and helping in many emergencies that came up. for a number of years, she worked on the Old Folk Committee helping prepare many meals for the Old Folks Day, outings, and parties in the Windsor Ward. She also helped take care of the flowers for funeral services in the ward for a number of years. After her husband's death, she sold the farm and home she had lived in since her marriage and moved to American Fork, Utah in 1945, where she lived until her death on Nov. 1, 1948, and was buried in Pleasant Grove, Utah by her husband. Also to be counted in her family are three grandchildren she raised after her daughter, Margie's death. These three children are among the many who came to know of her kindness, goodness, and her willingness to help others. By Helen Harper Frandsen, daughter (1954)
