Civilian, Wake Island NAS Lost life on Wake Island, October 1943. W W II ---------------------------------------------- Death Of Dave Boyce On Wake Island Is Confirmed by Navy Was One of 96 American Civilians Killed By Japs In a letter to members of the family, the Navy Department at Washington, D.C., has confirmed the death of Dave Boyce, better known to his Shelton friends as "Mike." He was one of the 96 American civilians on the island, at the time it was taken by Japs Dec. 23, 1941, who were killed in a mass murder in October, 1943. Evidence produced at a U.S. Navy trial indicated that the men were led from their barracks to the beach where their hands and feet were tied. They were blindfolded and ordered to face the ocean. Three platoons of Japanese soldiers stood to the rear of them with rifles and machine guns and the command was then given that ended the lives of all of the men. The Japanese admiral and ten other Japanese naval officers were convicted of the mass murder in the U.S. Navy court early in January of this year and sentenced to hang for the crime. The Americans, most of them from the western states, had been building a navy base when the Japs took the island. Boyce, who formerly lived in Shelton, had been working at the carpenter trade and in April, 1941, he signed for nine months at Wake Island. He was working there as a carpenter foreman. The island was captured by the enemy before his time was up. Boyce's parents who lived here many years ago, and later moved to Fleming, Ohio, both preceded him in death. He is survived by four children, two sons and two daughters, living in Denver, Colo. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Esta Miller, living at the Soldiers Home in Grand Island, Mrs. Nona McKee and Mrs. Nora Pickering, both of Shelton, and two brothers, W. H. Boyce, Shelton, and Ed Boyce who lives at Johnstown, Colo.
