Died - Pinkerton - at his home with his daughters in Omaha, Sunday, February 20, 1916, Joseph Pinkerton, aged 75 years, 9 months and 18 days. Joseph Pinkerton was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, May 2, 1840. He enlisted in Co. "E," 105 Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in 1863 and was honoraby discharged in 1865. He came west and homesteaded in Hamilton Co., Nebraska, in 1874 and resided there until 1895, when he removed to Greeley, Nebraska. When the first rural route was established from this office he was appointed carrier and serviced the partrons of Route 1 faithfully for several years. After the death of his wife in November, 1914, he resigned his position as carrier and went first to live with his daughter, Mrs. C. I. Donnell, at Arcadia; during the past winter he went to Omaha where Misses Jessie and Katherine were. He was survived by six children: Jessie A. Pinkerton of Omaha, Dr. W. J. Pinkerton of Bostwick, J. A. Pinkerton of Hillsboro, Oregon, Mrs. C. I. Donnell of Arcadia, Katherine B. Pinkerton of Omaha and R. H. Pinkerton of Bayard - all of whom were present at the funeral except John A. He was a valued memeber of the Thos. H. Meagher Post G.A.R. of Greeley and the Knights of Pythias Lodge, and T. J. Howard and Joe Shartzer went down to represent these lodges, Mr. Howard carrying some beautiful carnations from the Knights. Mr. Pinkerton will long be held in kindly remembraance by the people of Greeley and particularly patrons of Route 1 and his family have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. The Greeley Citizen, February 25, 1916, page 5, transcribed by Linda Berney. ------------------------ Joseph Pinkerton was born in Sewickley Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania to James Pinkerton b. 1784 and Rachel b. 1810. There is a small stream named Pinkerton Run, along which the early Pinkertons resided. Many of the early Pinkertons are buried in the Sewickley Union Cemetery, West Newton, PA.
