Walter Harrison Holt Merrifield, known as Harrison, was of the line of Henry Merrifield (1618-1687) of Dorchester, one of the first settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was born in 1838 to Asaph and Lydia Norris Merrifield in Sandhill, Pennsylvania, the fourth of ten children. When he was 23 years old he married Emma Baker and was immediately conscripted into the Federal Army to serve in the Civil War. It was while he was serving with the New York 8th Heavy Artillery Regiment on May 19, 1864 at Spotsylvania that he was gravely wounded suffering with disability for the rest of his life. He and Emma had two children, Ervin and James, before they divorced. In 1872, Harrison married Eugenia "Lettie" Vroman in Colorado. He was 33 years old at the time and she was 19. They went on to have 10 children over the next 21 years residing primarily in Nebraska and South Dakota. Harrison would live the last years of his life in a veteran's home and would pass away in 1919 in Los Angelos, California at the age of 80.
