R.J. "Jake" Snapka, departed into the arms of the God on Monday, May 15, 2000 after a valiantly fought battle with Lymphoma cancer. God saw Jake was getting tired and a cure was not to be, so he put his arm around him, whispered, "Come to Me." Jake's journey on earth was a constant source of lessons and inspirations of courage for all that were privileged to know him. Constantly dealing with adversity, he redefined the meaning of strength and fortitude. Jake retained an unfailing faith in God and the grasping of Life's greatest meaning. A calm, easy-going manner, sincere smile, warm heart of forgiveness, an amazingly positive attitude; solid and unwavering character, along with his handsome looks, made Jake a very easy man to love. Jake took pride in his accomplishments, always attempting perfection. He was always devoted to his family and his friendships were one his greatest treasures. His memory and spirit will remain very much alive among us. Jake was born on October 25, 1936 in Abbott, Texas to Roman and Sophie Snapka. After graduation from Miller High School, he joined the United States Navy, as a Machinist, serving his tour of duty in Alaska. He than attended Del Mar College. An employee of Reynolds Metal Company for forty years, he loved the outdoors and was a rancher in Bee County. For many years, he was a member of the Portland Volunteer Fire Department and on the Board of Directors for the Rincon Water District. Preceded in death by his mother and father. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, May 17, 2000 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 1008 Austin, Portland, with a Virgil Service at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3:00 PM., Thursday, May 18, 2000 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. Interment will follow at San Patricio Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to U.T.M.D. Anderson Cancer Center % Anderson Network, 1515 Holcome, Box 223, Houston, 77030 or American Cancer Society.
