Smith LT USN Rapid City Journal , November 18, 2006, Page 28. via Newspapers.com Maxine Waltman Smith RAPID CITY - Maxine Waltman Smith, 90, Rapid City, died at a local assisted living center, Thursday, November 15, 2006. She was born March 19, 1916, in Hitchcock, South Dakota, to Lewis and Theresa (Anderson) Sutter. She attended the University of South Dakota and was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. Maxine worked as a private secretary for the manager of the Sioux Falls Gas Company and also for Charles H. Gurney in Yankton. She married Edward Bertil Waltman on October 12, 1940, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Minneapolis, MN. They moved to Rapid City, where Maxine was a longtime parish secretary at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Edward died in 1961, and she was later married to Frederick M. Smith by Bishop Walter Jones at Calvary Episcopal Cathedral in Sioux Falls. Fred died in 1976. Maxine was a longtime member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and a member of AU PEO Sisterhood. She was a life master at duplicate bridge and was once honored as Mother of the Year by the Rapid City Downtown Association. Survivors include her son, Dr. Steve Waltman, and his wife, Karen, Rapid City; 2 daughters, Katherine Mayben, Issaquah, Washington, and Elizabeth Smith Condie, Wichita, Kansas; a sister, Jean Vaughn Penn, Larchmont, New York; and 5 grandchildren. Maxine will be deeply missed by her friends and family. A memorial has been established to Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 20, 2006, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapid City with the Very Rev. Dr. Robert Wagner officiating. Private interment services will be held prior to services at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis under the direction of Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
