From 1930s WPA Grave's Registration Survey
From Civil War military records: Keller, William R. Age 24. Residence Leon,Iowa Nativity Indiana. Enlisted July 6. 1861 into Co D 4th Iowa Infantry. Mustered Aug. 17, 1861 Council Bluffs,Iowa. Unit was deployed almost immediately, with virtually no training, to Missouri to repel a possible Confederate attack. Discharged Sept. 18, 1861, Rolla, Mo. No reason listed. Possibly for disability since muster points like Council Bluffs and Jefferson Barracks, Missouri were hotbeds of disease. Either the birth date in WPA records or military records is incorrect since he would have been born around 1838 if 24 years old. The 1825 date seems more likely based on Mexican war history. Perhaps he lied about his age since they were giving preferential treatment for younger men? Or it is merely a transcription error.
