William was the only child of Samuel & Amanda M. (Taylor) Russell. His mother died when he was a young boy, & his father married Sarah A. Gilliam in 1864. William married Rebecca "Melissa" Moore in 1867. Melissa was the daughter of James Lemuel & Louvice (Bean) Moore. On July 21, 1870, Russell M. & Malisey J. Russel, ages 21 & 23, lived in Hickman, Scott Co, AR on a farm adjacent to his father & step-mother, Samuel & Sarah, ages 47 & 36, & children. Their post office was in Waldron. They had a son, Robert L., age ten months. their personal estate was valued at $150. William farmed to support the family. Other members of their household were Minta & Mary E. Russel, ages 72 & 28, William's grandmother and aunt. On June 17, 1880, William & Melissa Russell, ages 33 & 34, were still on their farm in Hickman, Scott Co, AR where he continued to support the family farming. Their children were Robert L. age 10; twins, Manda L., & James W., 8; Mary E., 4; & Jerry G., 10 months. William's cousin, Johan S. Gist, age 23, lived with them, helping with the farm work. 1880 Agriculture Census - Hickman Township, Scott Co, AR William owned 18 acres of improved & 29 acres of unimproved land worth $350. He had $50 worth of farming tools & $175 worth of livestock. Estimated farm production was $500. He had 1 horse, 1 mule or ass, 4 milch cows & 4 other cattle. Two calves were dropped, & he had purchased 2 head of cattle & sold one. 100 pounds of butter was churned. He had 40 swine, 12 barnyard & 23 other poultry which had laid 25 dozen eggs. 12 acres produced 200 bushels of Indian Corn, 10 acres produced 8 bales of cotton & --- acre produced 15 bushels of sweet potatoes. He had cut 40 cords of wood valued at $30. William & Melissa moved to TX around 1900 & settled in Farmersville, Collin Co, TX. They had been there 10 years when Melissa died at 9:30 a.m.on January 11, 1910, from "Paralysis." She had lived 63 years, 3 months, & 21 days. On April 28, 1910, William M., age 62, lived in Farmersville with his children Samuel M. & Nora C., ages 31 & 19 (both still single). He was a Stockman dealing in horses & mules. His son, Sam, helped in the business. William (shown as a horse trader on his death certificate) died in Farmersville, from Pneumonia at 5:20 p.m. on Sept. 5, 1913. He had lived 65 years & 8 months.
