Mrs. Lorene Shook, 96, former Independence resident, died Monday, March 9,2009 at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Springfield, Missouri. Cremation has taken place. Graveside Memorial services will be held at 1:30 pm Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the Mt. Hope Cemetery with the Reverend Terry Hatfield, pastor of the First Christian Church of Independence officiating. Inurnment will be under the direction of the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel of Independence. The family has suggested memorial remembrances to the Webco Manor, 1687 W. Washington, Marshfield, MO 65706 or the First Christian Church, 319 W. Laurel St., Independence, KS 67301. Remembrances will be received at the funeral home. Lorene Shook was born February 25, 1913 at Marshfield, Missouri, the daughter of William Wesley Hargus and Ruth N. (Day) Hargus. She attended High Prairie grade school and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1931, where she was selected as a member of the National Honor Society. On May 14, 1937 at Independence, KS, she was united in marriage to Glenn E. Shook. The couple owned and operated Shook Grocery Store in Independence for many years. Mr. Shook preceded his wife in death on May 5, 1967. In October of 2003, Mrs. Shook moved to Springfield, Mo. area. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence, the Christian Women's Fellowship, the Home Builders Sunday School Class and the 58 Sewing Circle. Mrs. Shook was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clyde and Lorin Hargus; three sisters, Florence and Anna Bell Hargus and Frances Baldwin. She is survived by one brother, Warren and wife Wilma of Marietta, GA; two sisters, Reba Hargus and Eva Lee Letterman of Marshfield, MO ;two sister-in-laws, Ruby Hargus of Marshfield, MO and Eva Mae Hargus of Elkland, MO and 13 nieces and nephews. Interment: Mount Hope Cemetery Independence, Kansas
