Went by "Sterle." Son of George F. Smith and Hannah Elizabeth Neely. He married Mattie Gann Anderson on July 10, 1906 at Emblem, Hopkins Co., TX. His WW1 card says born Oct 13 1877. Cemetery has 1876. Sulphur Springs, Texas Jan. 23, 1949 Funeral services for Samuel Stirling Smith, 73, a farmer, were held at the Methodist Church of Emblem, near Sulphur Springs. He died at his home Friday. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jack Smith of Pickton, and Leon B. Smith, Cumby; four daughters, Mrs. Paul Peacock, Markham; Mrs. Lloyd Quary, Cumby; Mrs. Herman Neighbors, Mount Pleasant; and Mrs. Herman Reynolds Fort Worth; two sisters, Mrs. Georgia Littrell, Ridgeway in Hopkins County, and Mrs. Bud Kiker, Childress, and five grandchildren.
