Bio

Death of Wm. M. Berry On last Sunday morning at 5 o'clock William M. Berry died at his residence one mile south of Ellettsville, from peritonitis, produced by kidney trouble, from which ailment he had suffered for several years. On June 7th he was confined to his bed with malarial fever, and he steadily grew worse until peritonitis developed June 11, from which time up to his death he was very ill with no indications of recovery. He was born in Monroe county Dec. 30, 1844. He acquired a common school education, and when a young man went to California where he worked at carpentering for some time. Later he returned home and on Feb. 1, 1866, was married to Margaret A.C. Thomas, and moved to Iowa, where the family remained several years. While residents of that state four children , Charles, Frank, Lou and Joe were born to Mr. and Mrs. Berry. They returned to the old homestead, near this place, and five children were born to them, George, Ola, Samuel, Julia and Nellie. Less than a year ago Lou, the oldest daughter, died. The rest of the children, with their mother, survive the husband and father. Wm. M. Berry was one of our very best citizens. He was a plain, unassuming man, just in his dealings, energetic, conducting his saw mill and farming business with good judgement; always the same quiet, cool man under adverse or favorable circumstances, and his death is a severe blow to his family and our community. Taken from our midst in the prime of his usefulness, and with so little warning, it is difficult to realize that he has forever been removed from earth. He left his impress unmistakably and deeply upon his large family of boys and girls, and his beautiful, even life will continue to shine on through them. Monday at 2 o'clock funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev. O.E. Allen, and the remains were laid to rest at the Methodist cemetery.
