William J. Denton Target:Campina, Rumania - Ploesti Mission: 1-Aug-43 Serial Number: 42-40751 Aircraft Model B-24D- Aircraft Letter: Y- Aircraft Name: Location: Lt Denton's crew successfully returned to Benghazi Sgt Rackley was a recipient of the Distinguished flying cross for his participation in the Ploesti raid "Operation Tidal Wave" one of the most daring raids of WW2. Coming in at tree top level the Sky Scorpions destroy the Steaua Romana oil refinery. The refinery does not produce oil for six months. The 389th earns Presidential Unit Citation, all of the crews receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, The 389th BG loses six aircraft on this mission.
