Jim Johnson did not have a middle name. He wanted to distinguish himself because he felt his name (Jim Johnson) was too common. So, he gave himself a middle name. Most of the time, he only used the middle initial of 'W'. That initial is found on his gravestone. When asked by others what the initial stood for, he replied that it stood for Wise This story was related by his grandson, Caroll Elton Johnson, who remembers standing at his Grandpa's knee, while he cracked pecans with a hammer, and fed them to him. Caroll was raised right across the dirt road from his grandpa's homeplace. Some, however, think his middle name was William as indicated in the article below.
