OBITUARY : ADRON V. SHOCKEY, 79, of 321 W. 11th, Winfield, died Feb. 8, 2001, at William Newton Hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Military rites will follow in Oxford Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Memorials have been established with the American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Shockey was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Oxford, to Bessie K. (Overley) and Stanley L. Shockey . The family moved to Winfield when he was two. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1940 and attended Southwestern College. On Oct. 5, 1941, he married Christina Abildgaard at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. They made their home in Winfield. On Nov. 27, 1942, he entered the United States Army Air Corps as a second lieutenant. He was a pilot. On Sept. 19, 1945, he was honorably discharged to the Air Corps Reserves and was again discharged Aug. 15, 1954. After World War II, he returned to Winfield and farmed for 10 years. He later worked for Winfield State Hospital & Training Center as the farm and dairy supervisor. After that division was sold, he worked as grounds maintenance supervisor until his retirement in April 1984. Shockey was a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 110. Survivors include his wife, Christina A. Shockey, Winfield; two sons, Stuart A. Shockey, Houston, Texas, and Loren D. Shockey, Salina; a daughter, Kaellen D. Mirth, Houston; a brother, Winfred Shockey , Winfield; three sisters, Dr. V. Mae Leopold , Odessa, Mo., Savinha Harpending , Camarillo, Calif., and Loretta Louise Ralph, Ventura, Calif.; and four grandchildren. Shockey were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 12, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Rick Thornton officiated. Special music included "Go Rest High on That Mountain," sung by Vince Gill, and "Amazing Grace," sung by Anne Murray. Burial was in Oxford Cemetery. American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544, both of Winfield, performed military honors. Casket bearers were Delbert Graham, Ben Harris, Tom King, Bud Long, Don Schwantes and Boyd Smith. Memorials have been established with the American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society.
