Family legend states that William Howard Welford came to Greene County, MS, after he jumped ship in Mobile, AL. Another says that his family sent him to live with relatives in Adamsville, Greene Co., MS, to avoid having to serve in the military in Europe. William arrived in Greene County, MS, probably as early as 1830. William appears in the 1840 US Census in Greene Co., MS, but not the 1830 one. He married Abigail Dickerson, daughter of Matthew W. Dickerson and wife Zyphia Roberts. William and Abbie had a daughter born in 1833 in Greene Co., MS. He and Abigail had 12 children; three of their sons fought in the Civil War - William, Henry, and Joel. William was wounded in the left leg; Henry lost an eye. Both were brought home by their mother from Atlanta in a wagon.
