Bio

Abigail Etta Dickerson was the daughter of Matthew W. Dickerson (1770-bet.1830-1840) and Zyphia Roberts (abt. 1792-bet.1850-1860). The following obituary appeared in the "Greene County Herald," a newspaper published in Leakesville, Greene Co., MS, on Friday, July 24, 1908. "Abigil Welford died at the home of her son, Henry Welford, on Wednesday, June 17, 1908. The deceased was born in Greene County, Mississippi, June 24, 1814. She was 93 years, 11 months, and 24 days old. She was the mother of 12 children of which 6 are living to mourn her death. She was confined to her bed seven weeks before the Lord saw fit to call her home from her sufferings. She had blood poison that caused her death. She suffered untold pain, but bore it all, always asking the Lord for his mercy and relief. She had been a member of the Baptist Church for about 30 years and has lived a Christian life every since she became a member of the Church, always trying to get everybody to be Christians and live and work for the Lord. Just a short while before she died she said she was going to her long sought home of rest. She said she had done the best she could to serve the Lord, and she wanted her children to do the same. Abigil Welford, the deceased, was the mother of 12 children, 6 of them still living. She was the grandmother of 57 living grandchildren, great-grandmother of 174 living great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandmother of 15 living great-great-grandchildren which makes 252 in all. This is as near a correct record of her living family relations as we could get. There may be more than this as they are some of them living in twelve different counties and states. We all hope when our work in this world is done to meet our dear grandmother in Heaven where sad parting is no more. She saw the great struggle of the Civil War. She went from her home after one of her sons that had been wounded on the battlefields of Tenn. One of her children was laid to rest in his cold and silent grave. It would make the tears come to my eyes to hear her tell of how she suffered for her children in time of that cruel war. She would go to the bloodstained battlefield to bring her wounded sons home where they (could) have a mother's care. May the time never come when our dear mothers will have to bring their dear children home from the battlefield. But may God gather us all around the beautiful throne of God. By her Grandson Henry Shipman, Miss. July 7, 1908" In November of the previous year, the following item was printed in the Mobaha news column of the "Greene County Herald." "Old Aunt Abby Welford, her offsprings: twelve children, sixty-two grandchildren, one hundred and eighty-nine great-grandchildren, and twenty-five great-great-grandchildren, and that isn't all which makes two hundred and eighty-three. (I) Don't think there is another old lady as old and has as many offspring. She is now 95 years old. She is blind, but is in good health." Abigail Dickerson Welford and her husband William Howard Welford had 12 children: Mary Ann, Nancy Ann, Sarah, William, Henry, Elizabeth, Joel, Levi, Roberson, Alexander, James, and John.
