Jesse married Mary Lindsey Gordon in 1860 at McKinney, TX. On March 17, 1862 at age 30, Jesse enlisted in Alfred Johnson's Texas Spy Company of Morgan's Cavalry Regiment in McKinney, Texas. In the cavalry, "spy" refers to scouts that rode ahead of the main force to gather information on enemy forces and assess their strengths. Jesse is listed in the company muster rolls as 5'5" tall, sunburned complexion with hazel eyes and auburn hair. After seven months of scout duty, he was shot in the knee during a battle at Old Town Ridge overlooking the Mississippi River near Helena, Arkansas on October 22, 1862. Jesse spent four months recovering in a field hospital and received a medical discharge from the CSA. He went home to Bonita, Texas to live another 16 years as a farmer and cattleman. In 1873, he registered a cattle brand in Montague County with a stylized JB. After the war, Jesse and Mary had four children, Albin, Andy, Xanthippa and Riley. Their only daughter Xanthippa died at age 3 years and 7 months in 1875 and hers is the earliest marked headstone at Center Point Cemetery.
