Bio

Adolph "Dixie" Stanley Pollak was born on February 3, 1920, in Temple, Bell County, Texas. He was the last and seventh child born to Stanley and Julia Pollak. His six siblings were Emil Michael "Mike" Pollak, Wilhelmina "Wilma" Pollak Shirk, Marie "Mary" Theresa Pollak Hibbard, Julia "Judy" Elizabeth Pollak Yost, Anna "Ann" Jeanette Pollak Patterson, and Rudolph "Rudy" Frank Pollak. At the age of 18 in 1938, Dixie joined the National Guard. He was discharged as a Corporal on October 10, 1940, When he was 22, Dixie married Loretha "Rea" Estell Hannon on August 8, 1942, in the Memorial Baptist Church parsonage on 13th Street in Temple. The minister was Guy Douglas Newman. Four days before his marriage, Dixie had re-enlisted, this time in the U. S. Army. At the time of his re-enlistment, Dixie was 5'11" tall and weighed 198 pounds. As newly-weds, Dixie and Rea moved to his first posting at Camp Benning, Georgia. Rea returned to Temple and later joined Dixie in Utah and Oregon. Dixie saw action during the war as a 1st Lieutenant of Company H, 315th Texas Infantry, 36th Division, in Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received a Distinguished Unit Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Bronze Star, and Presidential Citation. On November 30, 1945, he was discharged from the Army at Camp San Luis Obispo, California. The couple had two sons during their marriage and later were blessed with a grandson and a great-grandson. After returning from the war, Dixie worked at Rocketdyne in McGregor, Texas, for many years. He then worked briefly in the Maintenance Department at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He was then employed as a refrigeration mechanic at the Veterans Hospital in Temple, Texas. Unexpectedly, Dixie died from a heart attack on April 3, 1977, at the age of 57. He died at home in his recliner while watching football on television. He was buried at Bellwood Memorial Cemetery outside Temple, Bell County, Texas.
