Bio

Michael Chester 'Mike' Papiernik, 61, of Springfield, S.D., formerly of Ord, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, as a result of a single-automobile accident near Springfield. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. Tom Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Elyria. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church, with a rosary at 7. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Papiernik was born Jan. 12, 1948, at Burwell to Chester Thomas and Irene Anastaisa (Osentowski) Papiernik. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Betty; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Adam and Alissa (Reiners) and Aaron, all of Ord; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Anne and Steven Punko of St. Paul, Sarah of Lincoln and Ruth and Kody McCain of Ord; a brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Donna Dobbins of LaHonda, Calif.; and a sister and brother-in-law, JoAnn and Phil Lagoni of South Bend. Additional survivors include 10 grandchildren, Chandler, Natalie and Ethan Papiernik, Erica, Courtney, Ryan and Kyle Punko and Tanner, Trent and Cheyenne McCain. He was raised in the Elyria and Ord communities. Mike received his early education at Elyria and St. Mary's Catholic School at Ord and graduated from Ord High School. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, graduating in 1971. Mike began his career in computer programming at UNL in the computer department, where he worked until 1978. He then went to work for TMI at Lincoln, which became Perot Systems in 2005. On Feb. 3, 1979, Mike was united in marriage to Elizabeth 'Betty' Ziller at Grand Island. The couple lived in Lincoln for a short time. In May of 1979, they moved to Mike's family farm northeast of Elyria in Valley County. Mike was a Freelance Computer Programmer and Analyzer and also a farmer. In 2005, the couple moved to a home on the lake at Springfield, S.D. At the time of his death, Mike was working for Perot Systems out of Lincoln and continued to farm near Elyria. Mike was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord and St. Wenceslas Catholic Church in Tabor, S.D., since 2005. For many years he taught CCD and confirmation classes. He enjoyed sailing, skiing, chess and hobby farming. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials are suggested to the Catholic Radio Station, St. Mary's Catholic School or the Ord Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
