James Mark John was born to Samuel and Eliza John, January 15, 1860 at Iowa City, Iowa, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Roy Hill, June 30, 1947, at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 15 days. When about seven months old he moved with his parents to Terra Haute, Ind., in 1874 they moved to Sherman County, 7 miles from Loup City. On August 27, 1884 he was united in marriage to Clarissa Winters in Polk County. He brought his bride to his homestead and has lived there all his life, with the exception of the last year, which was spent with his daughters, Eliza Slocum and Amelia Hill. His wife preceded him in death in 1935. To this union 11 children were born, three sons and eight daughters, Anna Gould of Custer, S.D., Charley, Comstock, Edward, Denver, Eliza Slocum, Loup City, Laura Anderson, Caldwell, Ida., Flossie Nelson, Ida Hughes, Amelia Hill, Fern Hurlburt, all of Arcadia, Lawrence of Gering and one daughter, Goldie Price, preceded him in death in 1937. Besides the children, he leaves to mourn, 32 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church in Arcadia Wednesday afternoon, Rev. James Vander Hiede officiating. The Hastings-Pearson Mortuary had charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Adam Huezda, Louis Larsen, Ernest Hunkins, A. T. Wilson, U. G. Evans and Charley Johnson.
