…His Decorah IA Newspaper Obit read: "Robert "Bob" Hitesman, 82, of Calmar, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005 at the Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah, following a sudden illness. Funeral services are Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. at Calmar Lutheran Church with Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Organist is Al Sensor, and soloist is Don DiLaura. Hymn selections are "On Eagle's Wings," "How Great Thou Art," "The Lord's Prayer" and "Lift High The Cross." Military rites are provided by Halverson-Giesen American Legion Post No. 266, Calmar, and Helof Holm VFW Post No. 1977, Decorah. Casketbearers are Mike Juve, John Juve, Lars Juve and Ryan Henningsgaard. Honorary Casketbearers are Gil Egge, Darrel Hoff, Jim Cutsforth, Richard Winter, Robert Eppens, Warren Madson and Linus Rothmeyer. Interment is in Calmar Lutheran Cemetery, Calmar, and Schluter-Balik Funeral Home-French Chapel, Calmar, is handling arrangements. Robert Lou Hitesman was born Oct. 8, 1922, the son of Charles and Vivian (Wyant) Hitesman in Edgewood, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1938. He lived with his aunt and uncle in Michigan for two years. before he was drafted into World War II. He served in the 85th Ordinance Battalion as a medic from 1943-1946, entering Normandy Beach on D-Day. While in England, he met Marjorie Dolton and they were married Aug. 31, 1945 at St. John's Church of England in Plymouth, England. After the service, they moved to Edgewood, Iowa, where he worked for the Iowa Highway Patrol for one year. They then moved to Calmar, where he operated his own gas station and then went to work for the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department as a deputy. Bob Hitesman then served as Winneshiek County Sheriff from 1956-1961 and was the Chief of Police in Decorah from 1962-1966. He also served as a Magistrate Judge for Winneshiek County for 23 years, retiring in 1994. Bob Hitesman was also mayor of Calmar from 1970-1973. He was a member of Calmar Lutheran Church, Halverson-Giesen American Legion Post No. 266 and Helof Holm VFW Post No. 1977. He loved buying, selling and keeping cars clean. He enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and keeping his house meticulously neat. He also enjoyed boat rides on his "Daisy Mae" on the Mississippi River, drinking coffee and carpentry work. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Hitesman, Calmar; two daughters: Sheryl (Ron) Juve and Lynn (Roger) Henningsgaard, all of Decorah and one son, Bill Hitesman and friend Barb, Hastings, Neb.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one nephew; one great-niece and one great-nephew. Seven grandchildren: John (Dina) Juve, Mike (Sarah) Juve and Lars Juve; Jo Ann (Tom) Berns and Ryan Henningsgaard; Nicole and Heather Hitesman. Nine great grandchildren: Tyler Juve, Tommy Rivera; Lillian Juve; Dylon, Kaitlyn and Dustin Berns; Hope Henningsgaard; Aubrey and Kelsey Hitesman. One nephew: Tom (Lynne) Gladfelter, Schaumberg, IL; one great niece: Cheryl Gladfelter and one great nephew: Michael Gladfelter. Robert "Bob" Hitesman was preceded in death by his parents and his half sister, Wilda (16 MAR 1917-26 DEC 2004)Schaumburg Cook IL. ..They had been involved in a near fatal traffic accident on 13JUN2002.
