James was born in Hardin county, Kentucky, the fifth son of William S. and Nancy Mayfield Compton, natives of Kentucky and North Carolina, repectively. He enlisted in the 6th Kentucky Volunteers (Confederate Infantry) and was wounded at Dallas, falling into Federal hands but later escaped and returned to Confederate lines. On May 6, 1866, he married Susan Wood Hill of Bullitt county, Kentucky. They had ten children: Alonzo, Edmond, Clarence, twins Martha and Mary, Virgil, James, Joan , Nora and Annie. When Martha was small, she fell out of the wagon and a wheel ran over her, causing her death. Source: Heritage of Jasper County, Illinois 1988
