Bio

Businesswoman & retired Dallas Independent School District band director Bettye Wallace died Oct. 31, 1991 of cancer. She graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, and received her master's degree from North Texas State University, now the University of North Texas. Ms. Wallace was band director at Rylie and when H. Grady Spruce High School opened in the fall of 1963 she became its first band director. There were few women band directors of high schools in Texas at that time so she had to fight an uphill battle to prove that she could do the job. Known as "Mom Wallace" to her students she always took time for their problems whether related to band or not. She retired from teaching in 1971 to run Smith's Nursing Service, a home health-care business, inherited from an aunt and operated with Ms. Marlene Saunders. Through the business, she founded Outreach Health Services, which now has eight branches throughout Texas. A member of the Garland Chamber of Commerce, she was honored as the first woman Rotarian in Garland for her service in the Lakeside Rotary Club. Survivors include her mother, Mildred McDonald of Hamlin, Texas; two sons, Vance Wallace of Southlake, Texas, and Leslie Burns of Garland; and daughter Cristy Wallace of Lewisville. Burial at Garland Memorial Park, 1600 S. Garland Ave., Garland, Tx 75040 (in block 307, close to the office)
