Son of John S Dodd and Edith Magnolia Ratcliff. Step mother Laura Belle Boydstun. He was born in Miles, Texas, and was a real estate broker. He was a member of The Gideons International and the Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his daughter, LaVerne Dodd of Chula Vista, and four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five great-great- grandchildren. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, Humphrey Mortuary, 753 Broadway, Chula Vista. Services: 1 p.m. tomorrow at the mortuary. Interment: 10 a.m. Wednesday, La Vista Memorial Park, 3191 Orange St., National City. 23 Jan 2003, pg. B7; DODD, JAMES LESTER Sept. 5, 1905 to Jan. 19, 2003 Known to many as Lester or "Papa Lester," a resident of National City, California for 51 years, passed away from pneumonia at the age of 97. He was a wonderful, generous man, a devout family man and husband to Faye, who predeceased him in 1995. He had been a Real Estate Broker and Appraiser since 1946, and was President in 1963, of what is now the Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors. He was very active in civic organizations including the National City Planning Commission, National City Kiwanis Club, and also Director of the County YMCA in the early 1960's. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of National City, Charter Member of Highland Avenue Baptist Church in National City, and The Gideons International. He was born in Miles, Texas. Always athletic, Lester loved baseball, football and fishing. As a young man in Texas, he played semi-pro baseball. He also studied pre-med classes for a career in medicine, but the Great Depression hit and he was told one couldn't make a living as a country doctor, so he went to work for Sinclair Oil Company to support his family before moving to San Diego in 1942. He is survived by his daughter, LaVerne, his granddaughters, Brenda Lucero Norton of Chula Vista, Esther Valdez of Lakeside, grandsons Rudy Ventura and Rick Ventura of San Diego, great-grandchildren Christopher, Ryan, Evan, Jonathan, Jessica, Christina, and Jamie, and five great-great grandchildren, and the Dickey family of National City. Viewing will be 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, January 23, 2003, at Humphrey Mortuary in Chula Vista, with services at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2003. Burial will follow at La Vista Memorial Park in National City.
