Bio

Clarence "Clair" Hammond Webb, age 72, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2007, in Las Vegas, Nevada, from complications of cancer, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 13, 1934, in New Harmony, Utah, to Clarence and Idonna Hammond Webb. He married Shirley Barber on November 26, 1954. Clair was born in New Harmony and raised and educated in St. George. He grew up helping his father, Clarence, ranch on the Arizona strip. He was a great cowboy. He loved his horses and rode all the trails of Southern Utah. He even courted his wife, Shirley, while breaking a colt. He would make the 20 mile ride one way on horseback to Hurricane to see her. Clair was an excellent Barber for 52 years. He loved to visit and tell stories with his customers. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held various positions in the church including; past Branch President of Porter's Rest Home, he served as Librarian for many years, past Young Men's Secretary, Elders Secretary, Stake Sunday School Presidency, Hometeacher, and also the fearless coach of the 2nd Ward Young Men's basketball team for many years. Clair enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping, and he especially loved to go fishing in Alaska. He learned to water ski at the age of 50, and at the age of 60 he learned to play the organ. Clair was the center of attention at any gathering. He always had a wad of cash stashed for whatever or whoever was in need. He loved Bluegrass concerts. Clair was stubborn but he was also gentle, kind, and loving. He always spoke his mind. Clair wasn't a phoney, he was the "real thing". He truly loved his wife, children, and grandchildren, and took great pleasure in their accomplishments. Surviving family include his, wife, Shirley of St. George; children, Michael (Holly) Webb of St. George, Janet (Wayne) Karns of Ivins, UT, Trisha (Dave) Terry of Ivins, UT, and Rachel (Matt) Putnam of Washington Fields, UT; 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; and siblings, Beth (Clyde) Evans of LaVerkin, UT, Richard (Joan) Webb of Moroni, UT, and Donna Ann (Doug) Leavitt of St. George. He is preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 8, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. George 2nd Ward Chapel, 166 South Main. Interment will take place at the St. George City Cemetery.
