Bio

CARNOT, Mildred Bernice Nekuda passed away with peace after a long illness with dementia and Parkinson's. "Milushka" was born on a farm near Hemingford, NE to Czech and Moravian parents. She spoke Czech until she was five years old, and learned English when she studied in a one-room country schoolhouse with her cousin Jackie. Mildred was an excellent student, played classical piano, attended plays and dances with her parents Louise and Emil, sister Arline, and the greater Bohemian community of family and friends at the CZBJ hall. She visited often with her grandparents Alois and Marie and her favorite Uncle George Vorovka, who lived on a nearby homestead in a sod home. The Nekuda family moved to Santa Monica in March 1941 where Mildred attended Santa Monica High School. After WWII, Mildred went to a dance at a Bohemian hall in La Crescenta where she met Jerry Carnot, her future husband. It was love at first sight for both of them, and they married in 1948. Jerry and Mildred built their home in Sherman Oaks, CA, where they raised their three children, Candy, Karen and Bob, and lived there for 45 years among great neighbors. They moved to Thousand Oaks in 1993. Mildred held a variety of occupations and had many interests. She volunteered as a docent for the Los Angeles Zoo, worked in two school offices, for SCBA, and for a playwright. Mildred had a green thumb; her gardens were abundantly flowered. She enjoyed playing golf; her favorite course was in Wawona, where she and Jerry often brought their friends. Mildred and Jerry loved to travel, play bridge, attended concerts and plays, and would dance and socialize with their large group of friends, many in the Czech community. She will be fondly remembered for her beauty, grace, intelligence, humor, many acts of kindness, and as a loving mother. At the time of her death, Mildred was survived by: her mother Louise Nekuda (age 98 ½) of Westlake Village, CA; her daughter Candis Hong and husband Jerry; grand-daughter Kari Ann Hodges and husband Jonas great-grandson Mark of Thousand Oaks, CA grandson Gregory Hong of West Hollywood, CA; her daughter Karen Carnot Brezsny and husband Tom and grand-daughter Chloe Carnot Brezsny of Santa Cruz, CA; her son Robert Carnot and wife Rosa of Boise, ID; her sister Arline Wortner and Doc of Ceres, CA; her uncle George Vorovka and wife Evie of Lincoln, NE cousin David Vorovka of Lincoln, NE cousin Cheri Thompson and husband Mike of Lawrence, KS and their sons Tony and Tim; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Those who preceded her in death: Her husband Jerry Carnot (1925-2004) father Emil Nekuda (1902-1981) maternal grandparents Alois Vorovka (1887-1967) and Marie Stumf Vorovka (1889-1971) paternal grandparents Frank Nekuda (1879-1922), Anna Križ Kozik (1884-1969) and Annie Feidler Nekuda (1880-1951).
