Violet Pittman, 87, passed on to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on October 21, 2008. She had recently moved to Castle Rock Care Center in Green River, Wyo. to be near two of her three children. She suffered a respiratory infection and was unable to recover. Violet was born on October 26, 1920 in San Angelo to Frank and Emille Motl. She was the eldest daughter of seven siblings. Being raised on a cotton farm, she quickly learned the meaning of hard work but also developed a love of the land. She experienced the Depression as a girl and World War II as a young woman. This instilled her beliefs of being thankful for what you have and working hard for what you want. Violet graduated high school and went to work at Reed Air Force base. While there she agreed to a blind date with a Texas Tech student who had recently served in the Navy by the name of Gardner Pittman. The date turned into a serious courtship and they were married on June 15, 1947. Violet was caring for their first child, a girl, Richi Lee while Gardner finished his Masters at Tech. They moved to Midland where Violet gave birth to two sons, Donald G. and Franklin Murl. As she cared for the family, her husband made a career as a petroleum geologist with Getty Oil. They were transferred to Bakersfield, Calif. in 1960 where they raised their children into adulthood. The California weather suited Violet just fine. She always loved roses and had beautiful flower beds. Violet and Gardner had the same love of the land. They planted fruit trees, grape vines and vegetable gardens. The whole family was involved at harvest time with canning, pickling, and freezing a variety of foods. Violet's specialty was making fresh pomegranate jelly and we all considered it a treasure. Through the years Violet had many other interests and outside activities. She participated in classes centered on cake decorating, painting and firing ceramics, quilting, and photography. Christmas was a favorite time and she hand made ornaments. She held various positions in the Petroleum Wives Assoc., school PTAs, and Bakersfield Methodist Church. While never holding a conventional job, she was a consummate homemaker. She managed all the organizing of the household. She could take Richi to dance lessons, Don and Frank to sports practices, yet still have dinner on the table when Gardner came home from work. Sunday dinner was always a special affair. She handled all the family finances, making sure the needs were met while still having some in savings for future needs. We could all count on mom being there for us. She was a believer in 'family' and the perfect example of 'loving care'. Violet and Gardner decided to move closer to their siblings in 1997 and relocated to Lubbock. Their retirement years brought trips to the Panama Canal, New England in the fall, and family reunions around Texas. You could always count on a good game of dominos and homemade ice cream at Violet's house. She had great wit and a sharp sense of humor. Violet is survived by her children, a daughter, Richi Kalivas and husband Art of Green River, Wyo.; son, Don Pittman, also of Green River; and son, Frank Pittman and wife Lacy of Tyler. She has two grandchildren, David Buck and Vanessa Pittman, and one great-grandson, Marley Buck Alexander. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and her husband, Gardner in April of 2006. Her loved ones include sisters, Dott Byerley, Dorothy Hooper, and Jay Dean Peters; and brother, Richard Motl. She leaves behind several nieces, nephews, beloved in-laws, and many friends. Funeral services will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church in Anton with interment at the Anton Cemetery at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 25, 2008. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the Church. The family of Violet Lee Pittman respectfully request that donations be made in her name to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 555, Anton, Tx 79313.
