Bio

John Wesley Studebaker was the son of Daniel Miller Studebaker and Nancy Hoover Wyland on 26 Feb 1829, in Ohio. His grandfather, Philip Studebaker, was captured along with an older brother and sister, by the Delaware Indians during the French and Indian War. Philip's parents, Heinrich Studebaker and Unknown Killough Studebaker, were murdered (along with a toddler and unborn infant. The 3 Studebaker children were adopted into the Delaware tribe. Philip was kept for 6 years, while his brother and sister were kept for 9 years. Philip later fought in the American Revolution, as did his older brother, Joseph. Heinrich Studebaker came to American in 1736, along with brothers Peter and Clement. The descendants of his cousins, started the Studebaker Wagon Co., and later, the Studebaker Automobile. John served in the Civil War (Union) in the First Independent Battery of the Minnesota Light Artillery. He first married Sarah Ann Harris and had 2 children. Second, he married Catherine House and they had 6 children. Lastly, he married Amanda Clementine Kelsey (Fry) and they had 4 children, including my great grandfather, Joseph Kingkade Studebaker, Charles Abner, Mattie Effie, and Minnie Alice. He also helped raise his wife's children from her first marriage, Julia, Frances, and Nancy. John Wyland lived to be 85 years old, and died in the home of my great grandfather in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
