Bio

Katerina Jurica was the daughter of Pavel Jurica and Rozina Chrastecke and was born on 26 September, 1817 in Hovezi #27, Moravia. She and Jan Kocurek married on 26 January 1836. Jan and Katerina had 14 children: Josef, Eva, Rozina, Josef, Anna, Frantisek, Jan, Veronika, Mariana, Martin, Frances, Tomas, Jan and Anna. The first 10 children were born in Hovezi, Moravia, two of which died in Moravia, the other 8 traveled to Texas with Jan and Katerina. The 11th child, Frances, was born on 18 June, 1855, at Sea, on the ship to Texas. The last three children were born in Fayette County, Texas. In the fall of 1855 Jan and Katerina moved to Texas and settled near Fayetteville. After a time they moved to Ruttersville on Rabbs Creek where they established a farm. There they farmed until 1876 and then bought a larger farm near Fayetteville. As their children married and established their own homes, their family grew smaller. In response to continued invitations from a married son in Burleson County, Jan and Katerina finally agreed to move there. Katerina passed away there on 17 March, 1886, and was buried at the Hranice Cemetery in Lee County, Texas At the time of her death, Katerina was survived by her husband, Jan Kocurek, and four sons and three daughters, Eva Kocurek Mikula, Josef Kocurek, Martin Kocurek, Frances Kocurek Krupa, Tomas Kocurek, Jan Kocurek, Jr., and Anna Kocurek Kollaja.
