Bio

Obituary – Svoboda, 23 September 1886 Fellow Countryman Dies. A well-known countryman of ours, Jan Kocurek, passed away on Saturday, 11 September (1886) at the home of his son, Jan, in Fayetteville. On Sunday the burial was officiated by Father Chromcik at the local cemetery. Jan Kocurek was born in the village of Hovezi, near Vsetin, in Moravia in 1818 where he lived until 1855. In the fall of 1855 he moved to Texas and settled in our county near Fayetteville. After a time he moved to Ruttersville on Rabbs Creek where he established a farm. There he farmed until 1876 and then bought a larger farm near Fayetteville. As his sons married and established their own homes, his family grew smaller. In response to continued invitations from a married son in Burleson County, Kocurek finally agreed to move there. His spouse passed away there and in his sadness, he moved back to his son Jan’s home in Fayetteville where he passed away last Saturday. He is survived by four sons and three daughters. He had a genial temperament and was always a good Czech. His fellow countrymen have lost a well-liked friend and his family has lost a wise and good father. May he rest in peace.
