JOHN SONNEFELD ANSWERS FINAL SUMMONS --------------------------------------------------- The death of John Sonnefeld last Saturday morning, December 3, removed from our presence one of the foremost pioneers to settle this part of the country, a man who was the father of a large and well known family. Mr. Sonnefeld had been ailing for some time and finally answered the call of his Maker with resignation to His will; the cause of his death was attributed to high blood pressure. John Sonnefeld was born in Poland on August 15, 1846, and died at Ashton, December 3, 1932, at the advanced age of 86 years, 3 months and 18 days, His early life was spent at the home of his parents; he served as an officer in the German army for about seven years and possessed a number of medals to show for his service in the army in his youth. June 15, 1870, when he was 24 years of age, he married Marcella Lorczyk and then, four years later, the couple came to America and settled in Pittsburgh, Penn. where Mr. Sonnefeld worked for three months in a foundry. From there the couple moved to Long Island, N.Y. and while there he was employed as a gardener for farmers in that vicinity and made a specialty of gardening at that time having small plots of ground for the differrent graden vegetables. Mr. Sonnefeld worked in these gardens and also carted the vegetables to the market in New York City by means of a team and wagon; it was while in the latter occupation that, on a trip made during a could rain storm, he suffered his first siege of rheumatism, and, after that, it bothered him throughout the rest of his life. Mr. Sonnefeld worked at this line of labor for four years. The couple then migrated to the wilds of Nebraska, to Sherman County, in 1881, where, for the price of a title, fifteen dollars, they homesteaded on a farm sic miles north of Ashton. The couple lived and prospered, rearing a large family on this farm. They remained on the homestead for 52 years before retiring and moving into town March 15, 1925, where they resided at the time of the death of Mr. Sonnefeld. On June 15, 1932, the couple had been married 62 years and both were living and enjoying good health. Mr. Sonnefeld leaves to mourn his death, besides his loving wife, nine children, five daughters: Pauline, Mary Shuda, Annie Vincent and Julia Vincent all of Ashton, and Lucy Vincent of Sargent, Nebraska; four sons, Frank and Anton of Ashton, Stanley of Farwell and Joseph of Arcadia; one child, their first-born, died in infancy. He also leaves three brothers and one sister but it is not known where they are or if they are living or dead; They were last heard from about twenty years ago. Jacob and Joseph were in the old country when they were last heard from and his sister, Eva Linder, was also in the oud country; one brother, Peter, was last heard from when he was in Virginia, but it is not known if he is still living. Besides the above relatives, he leaves to mourn his death, thirty grand children and fourteen great grand children, and many other relatives and a host of friends. The passing of this aged pioneer, well liked by everyone who knew him removes on who aided in making this part of the country a good agricultural section well tilled and rich in soil for those who now live here. Funeral services were held at the St. Francis Catholic church on Monday morning whith Rev. Father Jarzemski officiating at the services. The pall bearers were Mong, Martin and David Vincent and Stanley, Anton and Joseph Sonnefeld. Interment was made in the St. Francis cemetery. Postscript; From some other notes we have they had a child, that died at sea coming to the USA.
