Funeral services for Eugene A. Gerik, 94, of Levelland will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at St. Phillip Neri Catholic Church in Pep. Burial will follow in the Pep Cemetery under direction of George Price Funeral Home. Rosary will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at the funeral home. Eugene, born in West, Texas (near Waco) on Feb. 14, 1914, moved with his family to Pep in 1923, when he was nine years old. After a two-day drive in a model T Ford with his family, he met his father at the railhead in Littlefield and helped unload and move their belongings across the open range to Pep. His job was to drive the cattle with his pony while his father and uncle drove the truck with the other belongings. His family had the first "Mercantile Store" in Pep where he started freighting groceries from Lubbock at the age of 13. He attended Pep High School and helped build the Catholic Church in Pep by freighting sand and gravel for the foundation from the Brazos River on the Yellow House Ranch. Eugene started farming some of the Yellow House Ranch land after he was hired to pump its first oil well. This career lasted until he retired from farming in 1982 at the age of 68. He married Marie Morley in 1943 and raised two sons, Don and Chris. Marie preceded him in death in 1976 and Don in 2000. Eugene later married Geraldine Spencer on Dec. 25, 1981, and entered into the rental property business with her in Levelland, where, according to his grandchildren, "Papa Gene" could fix anything. "Papa Gene's" love of life included helping others in need, being a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Levelland, and just being a "Jack of All Trades". He also was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed hunting and fishing and telling tales with the best of them. Eugene A. Gerik quietly slipped away from the cares of this world at 9:26 p.m. Sept. 13, 2008, at the age of 94. He will be missed by all that knew him. He is survived by his wife, a son, a step-son, two step-daughters, a brother, a sister, 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
