Howard Smith Bell July 12, 1922 ~ Aug. 21, 2008 Howard Smith Bell passed away Thursday, Aug. 21 in Buchanan Dam at the age of 86. He was born July 12, 1922, to Willie and Laura (Smith) Bell in Cookville. Howard was a carpenter and built banks and post offices throughout the United States. Upon retirement in 1973, Howard and Joy moved to Buchanan Dam, where they enjoyed watching the beautiful sunrises and sunsets together. He was an avid chili cook and went all over the state to compete in chili cook-offs. Howard was the official photographer of the Terlingua Annual Chili Cook-Off. He is known for his photographs of wildlife and bluebonnets. They adorn the walls of several businesses in the area. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Laura Bell; sister, Lucille Graham; and a baby brother. He is survived by his wife of 37 years Joy (Pence) Bell; stepdaughters, Carolyn Pilgrim and husband Larry of Cisco, Cathy Lee and husband Tommie of Cisco, Cindy Guy and husband Randy of Abilene; stepson, Jon Thackerson and wife Signa of Buchanan Dam; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Faye Alford and husband Bobby of Dangerfield and Jean Chitman and husband Bill of Longview; brother, Louis Bell and wife Nona of Tyler; brothers-in-law, Billy Pence and Robert Graham of Telephone; and numerous nieces and nephews. Howard is also survived by longtime friend, Joe Poitevent and wife Mary Ann, and all those who have helped along the way. Graveside services were held at Bluffton Cemetery on Saturday, Aug. 23, with Rev. Stacy Nobles officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
